2010 “Push-up Woman of the Year”: Darlene Price

Today we’re taking a break from the weekly challenges, to bring you a fantastic video that Sleeves created for CrossFit Austin.  As most of you know Darlene Price was honored as the “2010 Push-up Woman of the Year” at this at this past year’s Christmas party. This video is her story, and a  testament to the character, toughness, and enthusiasm she brings to the gym every day.  We’re proud that she calls CrossFit Austin home, and we’re equally proud to share her incredible story with each and everyone of you. Enjoy!

February Athlete of the Month: Mike Kelly

State your Name and/or Nickname please.

Michael Patrick Kelly, better known as “Mike”

Occupation?

Mission Control Consultant for the Seton Family of Hospitals (actual title – hard to believe). Although our office aspires to send people to the moon, we’re the internal business consultants for the 9 hospitals in our system.

Words to live by?

“Take the time to warm up, cool down and stretch… you’re body will thank you.” – don’t know who said this, but it’s so true.

What is your fitness background?

Swimming and water polo in high school and then got lazy in college. Wasn’t active again until I found CrossFit.

How long have you been CrossFitting?

Started with my friends at CrossFit San Antonio back in the summer of 2007, so a little over 3 1/2 years.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?

It’s definitely the community. It’s a second family with it’s own unique language, culture and values. I’ve been to many different boxes while on business trips and felt the same sense of community all over the country. CrossFit Austin has amazing coaches and clients – a combination that keeps me coming back for more!

What are your training goals?

I’ve wanted to do a muscle up for a long time… that would be awesome. A walking handstand would also make my day.

Favorite sport or activity?

Besides CrossFit, it depends on the season. In the summer, I enjoy swimming with my kids at the Landa Park aquatic complex in our new hometown of New Braunfels. In the winter, running in half and full marathons has been my activity of choice.

Recent adventure you’re planning?

New Zealand – I’ve wanted to go explore both islands and take a real vacation ever since I got out of college. Still a dream, but hopefully in the works in the next year or two.

Tell us something we don’t know about you?

I watch almost any show on TV about Alaska – and there are many.

Longhorns or Aggies?

Not really a football guy, but would probably pick Longhorns.

So all of our 5:30 AMers are well aware of your powerful beard that gives you ridiculous pull-up numbers, and super human hip mobility. What other accomplishments would you attribute to the power beard?

Beards are the secret behind waking up to workout at 5:30 AM, RX-ing on all WODs and deadlifting small cars on the weekends. Honestly, I have to admit that growing the beard has been awesome. It saves time on shaving, keeps my face warm and gives me the undeserved appearance of being wise beyond my years. My advice is grow facial hair and live the life you’ve always dreamed of!

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words?

I’d like to thank Wes sticking out his neck by offering the 5:30 AM class and Tristy for faithfully waking up to coach us and keep it fun in the morning. It was hard to believe anyone would actually show up in the beginning, but it’s happening! 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM classes rock!

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit Austin?

-The workouts are different, the awesome people, knowing there is someone that is probably dying as much as you…But the encouragement and always knowing you can improve

What are your training goals?

-To master muscle-ups once and for all. And to beat Stacey at least once..jk!

-In the far away future I hope to train and compete in a tri.

Favorite sport or activity?

I have played pretty much everything…Soccer was my best and longest run, I was on my High School Varsity Team as a Sophmore, and played competitive club for 6 years.  I also swam competitively for 2 years, breaststroke and IM were my specialties.  I played intramural soccer a while back in college, but haven’t played really since that.  I enjoy running still, some…but really I haven’t had time to do much other than CrossFit, but what else would you really wanna do???!!

Recent adventure you’re planning?

Well there is a lot going on now through the holidays, so I am sure whatever it is, it will be fun fun fun!

Tell us something we don’t know about you?

Can not think of anything, so this is just one of many Betsy stories….

When I was a freshman in college I once fell asleep with a book on my lap studying(I’ve always been quite the student) and I woke up suddenly in a daze, looked at the clock, only to realize I had 5 minutes to get across campus to a math test. I threw on a change of clothes (off the ground) and ran out off the dorm room, out of the dorm, only to find it was pouring, but I kept up the pace and proceeded to fly (very ungraceful fall) down a half a flight of stairs leading from the dorm to the street, picked myself up, and kept running (and crying) Right before busting through the class door, I noticed some green goop on my arm…It suddenly occurred to me that I still had on a green mud face mask I had put on before passing out…

Longhorns or Aggies?

Texas State!! Go Bobcats, Eat em up cats! For sure Longhorns, though!

As one of the longest tenured members at CFA, whats your favorite part of the last two years?

Getting stronger, improving on workouts, meeting great people who have similar interests of staying fit and healthy, watching CFA grow and be successful, seeing others make strides in their ability and overall health, and (most importantly) feeling great!

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words?

I have enjoyed working out with everyone at CFA…thanks for being you!

CrossFitting has kept me motivated and allowed me to achieve goals, but also has helped me focus and has kept me thinking positive!

Movement is a medicine for creating change in a person’s physical, emotional, and mental states.  ~Carol Welch

November Athlete of the Month

In an effort to get to know the fine folks of CrossFit Austin, we embark on our Athlete of the Month series.  Each month we will spotlight a different CFA athlete.  This month we have our bearded hero Alex Gale…

State your Name and/or Nickname please.
Alex Gale aka AG, Silver (chemical symbol for Silver is Ag), Al, Big Al, 2 Liter, A gizzle

Occupation?
Real Estate Specialist for an engineering company

Words to live by?
I’m a Golden Rule type: “Treat others as you would like to be treated” and “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” -Friedrich Neitzche

What is your fitness background?
I have always been into playing sports. I played soccer and baseball from a kid through high school. I have never been a big gym person, as I get bored easily, but I still play soccer in an over 30 men’s league.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
Laura and I started On-Ramp back in February, so 9 months

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
The community and being able to see myself getting stronger and thinner

What are your training goals?
When I started it was to lose weight and get in to shape. I was 261 at the beginning of the year and I have lost over 50 lbs. and 20% of by body weight. My goal still is to lose some of my gut but I definitely want to keep progressing on my lifts and getting stronger and faster. Right now I want to get my double unders down.

Favorite sport or activity?
Soccer and of course CrossFit

Recent adventure you’re planning?
I guess Laura and I’s trip back up to Ohio for Christmas to see my family. Maybe something for our 2nd anniversary over Spring Break in 2011.

Tell us something we don’t know about you?
I have a pretty cool toothpick trick

Longhorns or Aggies?
I don’t hold an allegiance to either, I kind of like it when the Longhorns lose, and Laura’s dad is an Aggie so I would say I lean to liking the Aggies, plus I like all their traditions. We all know the Buckeyes are the best team in the country.

So everyone is well aware of the Power Beard that you’ve been rocking for the last month or so, two question: fill us in on the all the awesome super powers its gives you, and are we going to be seeing a spring mustache as a follow-up?
I don’t know if you’ve noticed but it’s made me faster in my runs (ask Skipper), I think it creates a little air pocket around my face so when I’m running it cuts through the air quicker than no beard. I am feeling a mustache, but I am not sure how long I can rock it at work and how long Laura would let me get away with it.

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words?
Since I am a man of few words I will keep it short. I would like to say thanks to all the great people I have met since joining CFA, they keep the workouts enjoyable and I look forward to hanging out more with everyone. A big shout out to Wes, Boone, Tristy and Chad for helping me achieve my goals so far and pushing me to new ones.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?

The 4:30 ladies…and everyone else too. The atmosphere, the community, the programing…it’s just FUN!

Longhorns or Aggies?

Longhorns

As a long time member of the 4:30 PM crew you’ve had a chance to work with all of the CFA coaches, in your opinion who sports the most ridiculous footwear?

Nugget, with the mismatched shoes and socks and everything else. It reminds me of something one of my students would wear when they dress themselves.

September Athlete of the Month Chaz Darling

Charles Douglas Darling a.k.a. Chaz, Chazzy D, Chuck D, Jazzy Chazzy, Chazmanian Devil, Chester, T-Rex (seriously), etc.

Occupation?
Medical Education Technician – Running the logistics for the medical education department of an orthopedic extremities company.  Also train and educate orthopedic surgeons on our products.

Words to live by?
Decide what you want.  Decide what you’re willing to give up to get it – Mom

What is your fitness background?
Limited.  When I was a kid, I played a lot of basketball, then got fat and moved on to football for 1.5 years in the 7th grade.  I hit a lull  in fitness until I decided to wrestle one year in high school.  I got to college and found my competitive/active edge and played racquetball, soccer, basketball, swimming, and became a gym rat.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
March 15th, 2010 so about five and a half months

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
The epic mind vs. body war that happens every day during a workout.  The body pleads with the mind to stop while the mind screams at the body to keep going.  I wish I could say my mind wins every time but it doesn’t.  I leave crossfit everyday feeling great, but on the days when my mind tells my body what’s what and pushes through the negative signals, its a huge burst of confidence and gives you a swagger walking out.  I love it.

What are your training goals?
Goal 1: qualify for regionals
Goal 2: qualify for the CrossFit Games

Favorite sport or activity?
Besides crossfit, its anything around water, soccer, and football

Recent adventure you’re planning?
Quantas airways will sometimes have random 4 day trips to Sydney or Melbourne at a REALLY cheap price.  They had one a month or two ago and I missed it….I’m not going to let that happen again.

Tell us something we don’t know about you?
I’ve been to Antarctica.

Longhorns or Aggies?
Horns baby!

Does your lack of a mustache hinder your performance in your chosen profession?
Since I deal with a lot of cadavers in my profession, I would say no.  A mustache would act like an odor sponge and that would not rock.

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words?
Do something everyday that makes you a better person than the day before.  Even if its something small, like reading, trying something new, or working out.  It will add up.

August AOM, Ashlee Winner

Ashlee Winner aka Winner

Occupation?
Commercial Sales Executive for Humana, Inc.  So basically I sell insurance to large businesses, employers, and corporations.

Words to live by?
Always do what you are afraid to do. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

When you look at your life, the greatest happiness’s are family happiness’s. -Joyce Brothers

What is your fitness background?
I grew up playing soccer from a very young age and went on to play collegiate soccer at the US Naval Academy (Yes, I went to the actual Naval Academy in Annapolis for 2 years….until I realized I had to do more than play soccer and go to class and that I would have to be in the Navy afterwards-but it was a great experience and I am very grateful for the opportunity to attend) and then transferred to Ohio State for my last two years of college.  After I graduated from Ohio State, I coached collegiate soccer at another DI university in Ohio, Bowling Green State University for 5 years,  so I have always been around athletics.  I have always enjoyed running and working out but nothing too structured since college until I found CrossFit.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
11 months – Wow!  I can’t believe it has been almost a year!

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
The structure, the comradery, the challenge, the friendly faces

What are your training goals?
When I originally joined CrossFit, I wanted to tone up and lose some weight….which I have done!  Now my goals are to get stronger and be able to do all the workouts Rx.  For now, my very short term goal is to finish the Mohican Warrior Challenge in the allotted time on September 11th!

Favorite sport or activity?
Soccer of course, but since I don’t really play anymore, I will have to go with CrossFit.  I also still enjoy running on my own.  Unless, you want to count shopping as a sport or activity…..

Recent adventure you’re planning?

Since neither my husband or I are from Texas, most of our “adventures” revolve around traveling to Ohio to see my family or traveling to South Florida to see his family.  We did just go to Mexico for along weekend which was a lot of fun!

Tell us something we don’t know about you?

I am fascinated with “Hollywood”.  I watch the E! network and read all the gossip magazines every week.

Longhorns or Aggies?

NEITHER!  The Ohio State University….yes, there is a “the” in front of that!  GO BUCKEYES!!!

If you could add a mustache to one person in the gym, who would it be, and why?
What is it about a mustache that is so funny?  They just bring a smile to my face whenever I see someone with one…Smart cars do the same thing for me…they just make me laugh every time I see one.   So, I guess adding a mustache to anyone would be funny!

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words?
I just want to say thank you to all the coaches and fellow CrossFitters who make it enjoyable and fun to work out.  Family is very important to me, and I feel kind of like CrossFit is a family…It’s like Cheers where you walk in and everybody knows your name….only considerably more healthy than sitting at bar and drinking.

July Athlete of the Month-Aaron “Fro” Douthit

In an effort to get to know the fine folks of CrossFit Austin, we embark on our Athlete of the Month series.  Each month we will spotlight a different CFA athlete.  This month we have the stylish Aaron “Fro” Douthit….

State your Name and/or Nickname please.
– Aaron “Fro” Douthit

Occupation?
– Software Developer at the Texas General Land Office

Words to live by?
“That which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger” — Friedrich Nietzche

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” — Socrates

“The Dude abides.” — Jeffrey “Dude” Lebowski

What is your fitness background?
– I’ve always been active, playing pick up basketball and tackle/touch football with friends and family. I was in competitive athletics (mostly football and wrestling) until high school, and took a sabbatical from fitness until college. During and after college I became a normal gym rat, doing chest/tri’s/bi’s workouts with leg workouts separating them. I continued with that format up until a year or so before I joined CFA.

I enjoy road races up to 10ks and have recently become hooked on adventure racing, having run in the Warrior Dash a couple months back in Fourney.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
– Since mid February, so about 4 1/2 months.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
– I love working out and hanging with my fellow CFA’ers and coaches.

What are your training goals?
– My goals are to be able to do a muscle-up by the end of the year, compete in next year’s sectionals, finish a 10 mi obstacle course race in February, and reach the Half-ton club.

Favorite sport or activity?
– Pick-up basketball. Honorable mentions to ping pong, ultimate frisbee, and competitive eating at Fogo de Chao (I know I can eat more than 2lbs and 4 oz of steak).

Recent adventure you’re planning?
– MudQuest in West, TX on the 2nd of October (6.5 mi course with with 30+ obstacles) and Tough Mudder in Austin (actually Taylor) on the 5th of February (10 mi course with 18 obstacles)

Tell us something we don’t know about you?
– I studied and played the Viola growing up.

Longhorns or Aggies?
– Neither. Sic ’em, Bears!!! (Please, stop laughing. We might actually make a bowl game this year. Crap, now you’re laughing harder, aren’t you?)

Does your lack of a mustache hinder your performance in your chosen profession, and when are we going to see the true manifestation of your nickname (Fro)?
– I want to say yes. However, the closest I’ve ever come to rocking a mustache was when I sported what I dubbed the Conquistador look: mustache with soul patch extending to the chin. I quickly removed it after a friend of my informed me he loved my “70’s porn ‘stache”. So, I’m pretty certain that’s not the image I’m wanting to promote. As for my namesake, once the weather starts getting cooler, I’m going to forsake haircuts until I’ve restored my afro to its former glory. I’m feeling frisky enough that I might even throw down the gauntlet and challenge wes to a Fro off.

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words?
– It’s funny to think that I’ve only been a member of CFA for the past 4-plus months when I consider some of the on-ramp goals that I’ve already accomplished. I’ve seen an amazing shift in my body’s tissue composition, adopted a Paleo dietary lifestyle (which has rubbed off on some of my family members who are in turn seeing results), dropped ~35 pounds, met Fran and Helen, and discovered what I’m physically capable of when encouraged/goaded on by the coaches and when applying my will.

Also, in that short time, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting all of the amazing people involved with the gym, especially getting to spend quality (if sometimes agonizing) time getting know Tristy, Boone, and Wes. CFA could have been just another gym I joined that had atypical exercise equipment and interesting programming. Instead, it is my daily fitness Mecca because of every CrossFitter I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the pain with during my time with CFA, who have pushed me to my physical limits because they are doing the same to themselves. Keep it up, CFA!!

Coach’s Spotlight: Tristy “Mac” Stephens

We are taking a quick break from our “Athlete of the Month” series, to give you a glimpse into the journey of your coaches.  We will do this periodically, to let you know that we’ve all fought a lot of the same battles some of you may be fighting right now. In the process hopefully give you the inspiration to continue fighting through the tough times.

You all know Tristy, as the kick ass trainer that makes you constantly stretch your hips in unbearable ways, doesn’t put up with you eating crap for breakfast, and won’t let you stop when the going gets tough in a WOD.  To us she’s an absolute rock, who is just as responsible for making this gym a success as either of us.  Everyone of you is blessed to work with Tristy, she is one of the most caring,  genuine people I’ve ever met, and has this silly habit of changing peoples lives on a daily basis.

This is her story….

I have spent my entire life battling with my weight.  I have been overweight since I was in first grade.  There were even times in my life when I was considered “morbidly obese.”  In middle school, I hovered around 200lbs, and my mom started taking me to a doctor who specialized in weight loss.  Throughout middle school and high school, I tried almost every fad diet that was released onto the market.  I would lose a couple of pounds here and there, but nothing significant and it would never stay off.  I played softball, rowed for a crew team, and I also worked out in a gym as much as I could.   I wasn’t scared of hard work, so I tried to stay active, but nothing I did made the weight come off.

When I got to college, most of the friends I made were athletes at my university.  I was surrounded with people who were in fantastic shape, and it was a constant reminder of the changes I needed to make.  So, I hired a personal trainer, started rowing for my university’s crew team and started making major changes in my diet.  I was working out twice a day 5 days a week and once a day on the 6th day.  I started to lose a good amount of weight for the first time in my life.  I went from a size 16-18 to a 14 and I was thrilled.

Over the next 5 years, I traveled extensively and lived all over the world.  I managed to stay very active and almost always had a gym membership in the countries where I lived.  My diet was more difficult because it was controlled by my environment, but I tried to remain conscious of the things I was eating.  However, despite my best efforts, the weight started to pack back on.

At the end of 2007, I moved to the Austin area with my older brother, Shane.  For years, Shane has been very dedicated to his fitness and health.  He has always been a good influence on me in that aspect, but since I hadn’t lived near him in over 10 years, it was hard for his influence to stick.  When we moved here, the first thing we did was join a Globo gym.  We worked out daily, made meals together and did everything we could to be healthy.  After about 8 months, we started getting bored with our routine and started looking for something new.  Shane mentioned that he had heard of this thing called CrossFit, so we started doing some research.  We did our first CF WOD on our own at our Globo gym, and after we finished, although we were lying on the floor gasping for air, we both agreed we were sold.  We followed the CF main page WOD’s for about a month on our own, and then we started looking for a CF gym to join in Austin.  We knew that we needed coaching in order to get the full benefits of the program.

In Nov. of last year, I came across a website that was promoting CF Austin in South Austin, so I immediately emailed  them (ed. note: about 2 seconds after the website went up!) to see if Shane and I could come join the free workouts they were hosting.  I was so excited and unbelievably nervous to go to our first workout.  I had visions of a group of people with ripped ab muscles, bulging biceps and perfectly sculpted calves who could all run a 4 minute mile.  I knew I would be the most out-of-shape person there, and it scared me to death.  When, I found out that Shane had to work and couldn’t go with me, I let my nerves get the better of me and didn’t go.  The next day, Shane had to work again, but I was determined to make it to the free CF Austin workout anyway.  My stomach was in knots, but I went and met Wes and Boone and did the workout.  Shane and I continued to go to all of the free workouts that CFA hosted in the park and then, as soon as they let us, we joined CFA!

Since starting CF a little over a year ago, my life has changed dramatically in so many ways.  The most obvious change has been that I have lost over 60lbs, and I am officially half the size that I was at this time last year (I started at a size 16 and now am a size 8).  I see differences in my body composition almost daily.  The most rewarding part of the weight loss is that I know that it will never come back.  The lifestyle changes I have made are permanent ones!  I attended a CF nutrition certification in March of last year, which totally changed the way that I eat, but more importantly, the way that I look at food and nutrition.  The most significant change CF has brought for me has been that I have gained self confidence for the first time in my life.  Every day, I look at the WOD and think, “man, there’s no way I can do that,” and then I go in and do it, and it’s an amazing feeling of accomplishment.  This attitude has translated over into every aspect of my life.  I attended my Level One CF certification last month which is something that I would have NEVER had the confidence to do a year ago.  For 28 years I made excuses, and overcompensated in so many areas of my life because of my weight and lack of self confidence.  It is a wonderful feeling to finally not have to do that anymore.  I have a lot more work to do to reach my goals, but I am proud of the progress I have made so far.  CrossFit Austin and the amazing owners/coaches have helped me make the changes in my life that I was never able to do on my own! I am blessed to be a member of the CrossFit Austin family, and I am so proud to be part of a community filled with such outstanding individuals!

We love ya Tristy, keep up the great work!

Yes, keep it short enough so the gray hairs don’t show.

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words…
Push yourself. Sounds simple but everytime I dont I feel like I’ve missed an opportunity to improve or learn something. Of course, this applies to most things in life.
