December Athlete of the Month || Kelly Harvey!!
Each month we spotlight a different CFA athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow classmates and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit Austin Community should be about.
Our December Athlete of the Month is Kelly Harvey! Kelly joined the CFA Family in October of 2019, but she was no stranger to the fit life when she joined our crew! Kelly has made her rounds and dabbled in several class times between CF and WL, but she’s recently found her spot in the 5:30 power hour! Kelly knows what it takes to stay consistent. She’s so in tune with what her body needs and follows through whether its a rest day, a recovery day, a push day, or a PR day! We’ve loved being part of the journey with Kelly and celebrating the wins along the way! Kelly, we are honored to have you as our December Athlete of the Month and as an awesome part of this team. What is your fitness background?
Oh wow…when I was little I was in dance classes (ballet, tap, and jazz), didn’t do sports in school really. I joined a womens self defense class 12ish years ago, which turned into kickboxing, sprinkled a little karate & ju jitsu in there, switched to Capoeira for a few years, added boot camp to Capoiera for about 6 months then dropped the Capoeira. Boot camp turned into official CrossFit, then added kickboxing to CrossFit for about a year, dropped the kickboxing and stuck to just CrossFit. Somewhere in there I got talked into coaching and I coached for about 6.5 years.
How long have you been CrossFitting?
Take us back to your first day of CrossFit… How did you feel? How do you compare it to workouts today?
It wasn’t official CrossFit, just a boot camp class, but I loved it! I was super excited and totally nervous was I’d never done anything like that before. I don’t really compare then and now other than I’m definitely stronger and “better” now.
What’s your favorite part of CrossFit Austin?
Current Training Goals/PRs?
1st would be to not hurt myself, outside of that I’ve learned to be more humble in my lifting and listen to my body more.
What advice do you have for folks just starting out in CrossFit?
You’ll love it! It’s not a cult…I promise.
How do you balance staying focused in your training when life gets busy?
Honestly, my training is what keeps me focused and sane, and we all need that to be a thing.
What is your cheat meal go-to?
Ice cream! And sushi, or Thai food, or pizza.
How do you use your fitness outside of the gym?
It definitely has helped me be more body aware in my massage career. It’s also cool to have guys look at me funny in the hardware store when I’m carrying big/heavy things. Lol!
Definitely the 2 herniates discs I found out about last year, I thought I’d have to stop lifting (which I obviously not what happened).
Tell us about a moment you felt most proud of yourself during a workout.
It was actually during a local comp a few years ago, I was in first place going into the final event, took second overall out of 8, not too shabby.
If you could create a WOD and name it for yourself, what would it be?
I did that earlier this year, the workout is in Triib somewhere, it called The Stuff and The Things. It’s like if Weightlifting went as CrossFit for Halloween.
What keeps you going on the days you don’t feel like it?
Knowing my body will feel worse if I don go to the gym. Sometimes I end up with a PT session instead of the WOD, but I’m there.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
I absolutely can not stand the texture of Chinet paper plates.
