Colleen: My story

Plain and simple cancer has affected my life in the last 9 years in a way that I think no family could ever anticipate or imagine. First, my 15 year old brother was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma on Dec. 12, 2002. He graduated from the University of Georgia in December 2010. My grandfather was diagnosed in 2003 with liver cancer and fought hard but from complications passed in October of 2004. In June of 2006, I was diagnosed with Ovarian cancer, early stage 1b and had a 6 month battle.  Now, my own father is fighting prostate cancer at home in Georgia. Like I said, it’s not a story one would ever imagine. The positive is we have seen many miracles, and my brother’s diagnosis started me down a new career path of combining sport with fundraising. I mentioned to Wes in an email that this June would be my 5 year cancer-versary. That’s a big milestone, and immediately as this CrossFit family is so supportive and great, Wes offered to do a WOD/event to commemorate that. You may know me as the girl that always has LIVESTRONG gear on when I work out, and yes I do work there but it has also become a way of life for me.

The Event

On July 2, I want to celebrate 5 years by doing a kick ass WOD with my CrossFit family. Any donation will get you into the WOD, simply go here http://run.livestrong.org/teamls2011/crossfitaustin to make a tax deductible donation to LIVESTRONG. With a $20 donation, you will get a LIVESTRONG shirt to sport as you take on the cancer kickin’ WOD. See you there!

CrossFit Austin is excited to host this event, and is looking forward to celebrating kicking cancer’s butt with Colleen!!  Mark your calendars, make your donations, and sign up for a time slot to participate in the WOD!

Announcement:  The supply of LIVESTRONG shirts is limited and there is no longer a guarantee that you will receive one with a $20 donation.  We apologize for the inconvenience.

Athlete of the Month: Catherine “Cat” Johnson

State your Name and/or Nickname please.
Catherine “Cat” Johnson

Words to live by?
“Never say Never” – Justin Bieber (via my daughter Reid)

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit?
The constant challenge to push yourself to the next level.  It doesn’t matter how good of shape you “think” you are in, a person can always be humbled by one of Wes’ killer WOD’s.  I never thought I would enjoy working out with others, but that has been one of the best parts of CFA.   Everyone supports each other.

What are your training goals?
700 lbs CrossFit Total by the end of the year.

Favorite sport or activity?
My favorite activity is being with my husband and kids. They make me a better person.

Recent adventure you’re planning?
I will be attending my 20-year high school reunion in July.

Blake and I just got back from taking the kids to Disney World.  Our kids think we are the S%^T

Tell us something we don’t know about you?
I once partied with Kip Winger of WINGER. I realize that about 70% of you have no idea who he is, but he sang some of the many musical gems of the 80’s.

Longhorns or Aggies?
I am a loyal fan of the Killer Horned Frogs of TEXAS CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY. I’m a bit fanatic about my Horned Frogs, especially during football season.

If I had to pick, Aggies. I’m anti-longhorn.

The Johnson’s have a strangle hold on CrossFit Austin related pictures on our website? Give us some insight whats it take to take a great CrossFit Austin picture?
Having kids in the picture usually helps. In fact, we can contract the kids out for photos, for a nominal fee.

April Athlete of the Month: Kavi Randhawa

State your Name and/or Nickname please
Kavi Randhawa. I don’t think I’ve ever had a nickname.

Occupation?
I am an electrical engineer, and I design processors for servers and mainframes.

Words to live by?
Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen. -Michael Jordan

What is your fitness background?
I grew up playing soccer and tennis. I stopped playing both while in college. I now play soccer in a work league, as well as CrossFit.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
I’ve been CrossFitting for about 10 months.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit Austin?
I look forward to sharing the pain of a workout with everyone in my class. I also love how I’m constantly challenged by all the coaches to improve my form/technique as well as give all my effort in the WOD. The workouts are tough and challenging, and I still get a little pre-workout anxiety before each one.

What are your training goals?
Since I’ve started here at CrossFit Austin, I’ve lost about 40 lbs. I feel a lot faster and stronger than I have in a long time. I hope to keep improving my strength and fitness. I’d also like to get fast enough to catch Skipper in the WODs that involve running. He currently smokes me.

Favorite sport or activity?
Besides CrossFit, I like to play soccer, and occasionally run the Town Lake trail.

Recent adventure you’re planning?
I’m planning my brother’s bachelor party in Cancun at the end of May.

Tell us something we don’t know about you?
I love late-night karaoke.

Longhorns or Aggies?
Between the two, I would have to say Longhorns. I still have a hard time watching Big 12 football, why is every game a blowout?

You managed to take the most epic Push-up Man picture in the history of CFA, can you give us some insight into how you pulled that off?
I wish I could, but I don’t really remember it that well. The picture was take at about 4 am on New Year’s day. I guess I was wandering around Times Square at the end of the night when I found the inspiration for that photo. I was surprised to see the picture on my friend’s phone the next day.

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words?
I’m pretty excited about being the athlete of the month. It doesn’t seem too long ago since I first started CrossFit. I remember being a little intimidated by how fit and athletic everyone was. The combination of the Paleo diet and the CrossFit workouts has really changed the way I look and feel. I want to say thank you to all the coaches and everyone in the CrossFit Austin community for helping me improve so much.

Words to live by?
“Well-behaved women seldom make history”-Laurel Thatcher Ulrich
My mom always told be to treat others the was you would like to be treated.  That has stuck in both my personal and professional life.

What is your fitness background?
I was “Daddy’s little linebacker” until my little brother was old enough to fill that position.  I am/was a swimmer, and started competing at age 4.  It was my first love, and will always remain a big part of who I am.  I swam in high school, did the athletic training thing, and played a bit of softball.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
I have been at CrossFit Austin for one year. Holy cow, time flies when you are having fun!

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit Austin?
I couldn’t pick one thing that is my favorite.  I love the community that is CFA.  I love being a little nervous (still) everytime I walk through the doors.  It is certainly the people that make me want to come everyday. And, I love my ladies…

What are your training goals?
I would like to continue my weight loss(at 70 lbs now), continue to get PR’s on my lifts, and eventually do some lifting meets.

Favorite sport or activity?
CrossFit, swimming, being at the lake, Yankees baseball, and generally being outside!

Recent adventure you’re planning?
My best buddy and I are going to a shooting school in Vegas at the end of the month…I’m going to learn how to be a ninja! (and learn to defend myself with my firearm)

Tell us something we don’t know about you?
Well, some of you know that I play the bagpipes…others don’t. Yep- Stupidest. Instrument. Ever. Also- I want to be a doctor and am planning on that goal fairly soon.

Longhorns or Aggies?
Hands down- Longhorns. Is that even really a question?

The Mustache, and Southern Do contest is weekend. Who’s the favorite? Whats your game plan?

On the ‘stache front, I have to say it will be close between David and Cody.  David has the “I’ll build her a cake or something” going on, and Cody- well, his is just rad. As for the hair- I have it in the bag. We have all seen the ‘fro that I can rock, second only to Wes.

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words?
You CAN do anything you set your mind to.  When you decide for yourself that things will change, the only person that stands in your way is you.  Surround yourself with supportive people and get it done.
