November CrossFit Classics

HEAT SCHEDULE!

CrossFit Austin and CrossFit Central are proud to announce another round of CrossFit Classics, a monthly CrossFit celebration for fitness athletes and fans in Austin, TX!

Once a month we pay homage to the roots of CrossFit and the CrossFit Games by competing in a “Classic” WOD. It may be anything from one of the original “girls,” a famous CrossFit Games Beatdown, or something even “nastier”! The workout will be announced on the first day of each month and will typically take place on the final Friday night of the month (exact times and dates will be announced with the workout). We will be accepting a limited number of competitors for the workout, so register early!

EVERYONE is encouraged to come take part in the festivities. Workouts do not have to be performed Rx, and we will have free drinks,  DJ Kris Kepler, MC, and after-party specials at local establishments! Follow this page for all updates and announcements concerning the event!

The event will take place at CrossFit Austin  on  November 30th, 2012

Taking on the Turkey

http://runsweatsparkle.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/eat-enough-feed-thanksgiving-ecard-someecards.jpg?w=560

Tomorrow is the first day of November and, for all intents and purposes, the start of the holiday season.  The next two months are hands-down the most difficult to stay on the path of healthy living and improved fitness.  Often 10 months of hard work and dedication back slide into two months of old habits.   Busy social schedules, treats at the office, traveling, house guests, and epic holiday meals all make November and December a difficult time to hunker down and focus on your fitness.  These aren’t just excuses, they’re legitimate obstacles, but the path of least resistance also yields the least results.   Our goal is to change the collective attitude towards this busy time of year, to view the Holidays as a challenge to be confronted head on,  a time to eliminate excuses, and an opportunity to jump your fitness ahead of the crowd of folks that are waiting for the New Year to accomplish their goals.

How can we help?  The Tour de Turkey Challenge is a way to systematically stay on top of your fitness during the busy holiday season.  Why?

Goals
Short and Long terms goals turn a dream into a plan. The long term goal of a successful final challenge will be the driving force of the 5 weeks. Additionally,  each week you will have a small GOW (Goal of the Week) to accomplish. These small chunks of success will keep you driving forward.

Accountability
The Tour de Turkey Challenge is always a Partner Challenge giving the challengers the added accountability of a team.  Sharing struggles, having someone to answer to, and having another person rely on your effort keep you moving and keep you motivated.  Shared success always taste a bit sweeter!

Eliminate
…Excuses. While it’s not always easy to get into the gym when life gets busy, there is never a legit excuse not to train.  Challengers will receive 2 workouts that need absolutely no equipment, and can be performed anywhere.  The goal is an athlete with significantly improved conditioning and improved abilities in  body-weight movements at the end of the 5 weeks. We may not be able to train everything, but we can still improve.

So who’s up for a challenge?

2nd Annual Tour De Turkey Challenge

CrossFit Austin is excited to announce our 2nd Annual Tour De Turkey Challenge! CFA is so proud of everyone’s successes this year and we want to make sure that we all stay on course and keep on the “straight and narrow” between holidays!

What is the challenge?

The Tour De Turkey will be a “couple’s” challenge this year. So, ladies and gentlemen, get ready to pick a partner of the opposite sex, come up with a killer team name, and conquer the 2012 Tour De Turkey Challenge!

The initial workout test will be done on Saturday, November 3, 2012. Everyone who signs up for the challenge must come in on the 3rd and complete the initial workout. If, for some unavoidable reason, a challenger cannot come in on the 3rd, the only make up day will be Tuesday, Nov. 6th. It will be imperative to collaborate with your partner and come up with a stellar name!!

Over the course of the next 5 weeks, your team will be required to perform 2 additional workouts that are outside of our regular CFA programming. These workouts will be emailed to all teams at the same time each week. Team members will be accountable to each other in regards to their workouts, nutrition, and sleep. The 2 additional workouts can be done individually or with your teammate. On Saturday, December 8th, we will host our final team workout challenge. This will be a battle of epic proportions… and each team will have a chance at victory!

Important Questions and Answers:

  • Can Level 1 and Level 2 athletes participate? Yes, both levels can participate.
  • Do my teammate and I need to sign up individually? No, only one person from each team needs to sign up and pay the $75 entry fee.
  • Will the workouts be scaled? Yes, there will be 2 divisions: advanced and scaled.
  • When can I do my extra workouts? You can utilize Open Gym times or do them outside of the gym. If you utilize Open Gym times, these sessions will count towards your allotted sessions for the month (like they usually do).
  • What do we win? Besides the obvious glory and prestige that comes with dominating a CFA challenge, the first and second place winning duos will be going to Fogo De Chao for a victory dinner.
  • How do I sign up and how much does it cost? There will be a $75 entry fee, per team, for this challenge and you can sign up and pay for the event here.

If you have any additional questions, please only post them in the comment section on this page so everyone can benefit…

October Athlete of the Month: Nicholas “Schittone” Schittone

State your Name and/or Nickname, please.
Nick Schittone; “Schittone”

Words to live by?
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
– Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love, 1963

What is your fitness background?
My fitness background? A five second stretch before I throw my leg over a dirt bike is about the extent of it.

How long have you been CrossFitting?
Wow, I guess it’s been about 2 1/2 years.

What’s your favorite part of CrossFit Austin?
You know, everyone says “the people,”… but when I started with CFA, there were not many people there. I got a lot of one-on-one treatment in the early days. I’m going to say the Coaches are the reason I continue to come back and not go to another box, even after taking a job in Round Rock.

What are your training goals?
My goals have always been just get better each day, in every facet of my life. But my CrossFit goals at this time are to Back Squat 300 lbs  (I’m at 290 lbs), run my second half marathon on Dec. 9th, and continue to up my capacity in a work out.

Favorite sport or activity?
Motorcross/ motorcycle racing. Give me a motorcycle and I will race it.

Recent adventure you’re planning?
Traveling to San Francisco for Christmas vacation with my wife, Christine, aka “Teeny,” and the BCS Marathon on Dec 9th.

Tell us something we don’t know about you…
Some people know…but most don’t know that I’m a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. It just so happens, that I’m hitting the decade mark as we speak.

Longhorns or Aggies?
All I have to say about that is: “Lets Go Packer’s, Lets Go!!” I’m from Wisconsin and I’m always rooting for my state.

Over the past two years, you been awarded the “2×4 Award” and the “Ear Muffs Award.” What does it take to be the only 2-time award winner at CrossFit Austin?
Well, it takes a lot of work and dedication to get so far under the skin of the coaches’ that they need to call you out in front of everyone at a Christmas party two years in a row.

Leave the fine folks of CrossFit Austin with some parting words…
I just want to say thank you to all the people I have had the pleasure to work out with as we all chase our goals. Joining CFA has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. It filled a void in my life needing to be filled.
